CFD Mourns the Loss of Bonnie Kaido

COOPERSTOWN - Bonnell "Bonnie" D. Kaido, 60, of Cooperstown, died Saturday, Dec. 31, 2011, following a lengthy illness.

Bonnie was proud to say that she was born at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown on Dec. 5, 1951, the daughter of Samuel W. and Bernadette (Rafferty) Kaido of Sharon Springs.

She graduated from Sharon Springs Central School in the Class of 1970, received her associate's degree from Cobleskill in 1972, her bachelor's degree from the College of St. Rose in Albany in 1974, and thereafter her master's in education from the State University at Albany.

Following her graduation, Bonnie taught business courses and coached girls basketball in the Sharon Springs Central Schools for several years. Subsequently, she was employed at Bassett Hospital and over her 30-year career at Bassett she held a number of positions, among them, Administrative Director of Medical Education, Director of Bed Management Services, and most recently Director of Emergency Preparedness.

Bonnie was a "giver" in virtually every sense of the word. She gave of herself for others in everything she did. In her teenage years she acted as the "message taker" and dispatcher for her father who was the Police Chief (and Mayor) of Sharon Springs. She volunteered as the organist at her church, the former St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Sharon Springs. She joined the Sharon Springs Fire Department and volunteered as an EMT until her move to Cooperstown in 1981.

In Cooperstown, she joined the Cooperstown Fire Department Volunteer Emergency Squad and served the squad in every capacity and office including five years as squad captain. She was an Advanced Emergency Medical Technician-Critical Care, and a Certified Instructor Coordinator on the Regional Faculty. During her time as a volunteer and regardless of what she herself was doing, she dropped everything and responded to the "emergency tones" thousands upon thousands of times.

Cooperstown area residents will agree that they were fortunate to be receivers of Bonnie's giving and caring nature and many will acknowledge that they owe their life to Bonnie and the always prompt and professional care she rendered.

An only child, Bonnie is survived by two aunts (in-law) Edna Rafferty of Reynoldsville, Pa., and Linda Kaido of the Albany area; and by many cousins, among them, James Vrooman (Shirley), Herta Mary Vrooman, Bernadetta Vrooman, Mary Ann Larkin (Ed), and Herbert Vrooman (Connie), all of Sharon Springs. She is also survived by her very special and dear friend, Gen Smerski of Cooperstown; her lifelong friend, Karen Twiggs; and her good friends, Bev Hargrove and family of Cooperstown, Stephen Clancy of Cooperstown; and by her beloved dog, Abby.

Calling hours will be from 5 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2012, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home, 28 Pioneer St., Cooperstown.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012, at St. Mary's "Our Lady of the Lake" Roman Catholic Church in Cooperstown. Burial in the Sharon Cemetery in Leesville, will follow the service.

For those who so desire, contributions in Bonnie's memory may be made to either the Cooperstown Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 322, Cooperstown, NY 13326 or to the Susquehanna SPCA, 4841 State Highway 28, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Arrangements are under the supervision of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown.
